KANYAKUMARI DISTRICT




Kanyakumari District is one of the 30 districts of Tamil Nadu state, and also the smallest. The district takes its name from the tourist town of Kanyakumari, which is at the tip of the Indian Peninsula and faces the Indian Ocean. The headquarters (capital) of the District is Nagercoil, which is 22 km from Kanyakumari town.

District Map:

The district is a land of tourist attractions with many historic and religious sites that are centuries-old and also endowed with great natural beauty, both on the coasts and the mountainous interior, with a rich variety of flora and fauna.

Nanjilnadu, which is the present Agasteeswaram and Thovalai taluks (administrative sub-divisions) of the district, was under the rule of Pandyas till the early 10th century and then under Cheras. Idainadu including Kalkulam and Vilavancode taluks were under the rule of Cheras. When the power of Cheras declined due to the rise of Hoysalas and western Chalukyas, the Venad (Travancore) Chieftains (descendants of the Cheras) took advantage of the situation and gradually established their hold, on many areas of Nanjilnadu. The annexation commenced by Veera Kerala Varma was to a large extent continued by his successors and completed by 1115 A.D.

Language spoken:

The main languages spoken by people of the district are Tamil and Malayalam. English is widely understood in the urban areas. While the majority in the district speak Tamil, Malayalam is an important language, and spoken by many, in the northern and western areas of the district.

HOW TO REACH:

The nearest airport is the Trivandrum International Airport, which is 90 km west to Kanyakumari. Kanyakumari is the terminal point of Southern Railway. The trains are operating from here till Jammu & Kashmir, the northern most parts of India (Himasagar Express). Kanyakumari Express offers journey till Mumbai. There is a daily train departs to Chennai named Nellai Kumari Express. The National Highway-47 is ending at Kanyakumari that stretches through Trivandrum. Tamil Nadu Transport Corporation is operating buses from Trivandrum and from other parts of Tamil Nadu.

Education:

The state runs the Kanyakumari Medical College at Asaripallam, near Nagercoil.

Tourist Spots:

Vivekanada Rock(Rock memorial)

The memorial stands on one of two rocks located about 500 meters off mainland India's southernmost tip. It was built in 1970 by the Vivekananda Rock Memorial Committee in honour of the visit of the great spiritual teacher Swami Vivekananda to Shripada Parai during the month of December 1892 for deep meditation and enlightenment.




KANYAKUMARI Bagavathi Amman Temple:


Devi Kanya Kumari, known as Kumari Amman (the virgin goddess) is one of the forms of Devi. She is popularly known as "Bhagavathy Amman". Bhagavathy Amman Temple is located in Kanya Kumari (formerly Cape Comorin) on the confluence of the Bay of Bengal, the Arabian Sea, and the Indian Ocean. She is also known by several other names, including Kanya Devi, andDevi Kumari.


Gandhi memorial:


In the year 1948 the ashes of the Father of the Nation Mahatma Gandhi was immersed in the sea confluence in Kanyakumari. Before immersion, homage was paid to the ashes in the pot with flowers. Gandhiji’s disciple Acharya Kripalani took efforts for the construction of a memorial for him. The foundation stone was laid in 1954 and a beautiful Mandap came into being in the year 1956. It is noteworthy that sunlight falls on the Peeta in the Mandap on the 2nd October of the year, the day of Mahatmaji’s birth.



Thiruvalluvar Statue-133 Feet:

The 133 feet high statue of Thiruvalluvar in the mid-sea at Kanyakumari which was erected by the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu Dr.Karunanidhi is unique and colossal in size and has no parrallel anywhere in the world. This statue is definitely enhance the appeal of Kanyakumari and spread the message of the universal poet all over the world through the lakhs of tourists who throng Kanyakumari. Ti will proclaim the words of Father Beschi who said: "Thiruvalluvar shrines as a star in the darkness of night, a lovely flower in the desert, a light that drives the gloom of ignorance and beacon light to the whole world".

karmaveer Kamaraj memorial:

Kamaraj Memorial at Kanniyakumari : The Hon'ble Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu declared on 19-4-1998 that the Government would construct a Memorial to honour the services of Thiru K.Kamarajar, the former Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu. The memorial was constructed on the seashore, where the ashes of the Late Leader was immersed. A building at cost of Rs.50 lakhs was completed in an aesthetic way with the permission of Government of india.

Sunrise & Sunset Point:


Every day at the twilights the beaches are crowded, as the area is famous for watching Sunrise and sunset. Kanyakumari is the only place in India where one can watch the sunset and moon rise simultaneously on a full moon evening. The unique feature of Kanyakumari is that one can easily discern the three different colors of the three oceans.



Vivekananda Kendra:

Vivekanandapuram is the headquarters of Vivekananda Kendra. It is a 100-acre campus at Kanyakumari - the Southernmost tip of India எwhich is a natural spiritual retreat. It has 24 hours water supply, generator support for emergencies, post office, State Bank of India , dispensary, STD facility, Vegetarian Canteen and frequent free bus service to and from Kanyakumari township which attracts thousands of pilgrims and tourists to seek accommodation in Vivekanandapuram..

Vattakottai (Circular Fort):

Vattakottai, a granite fort six kilometres north-east of Kanyakumari cape, forms the terminal of a line of ramparts known as the South Tranvancore lines built by Marthanda Varma to serve as defence for Nanjil Nadu. It is rectangular in shape and covers an area of about three and a half acres. The fort is enclosed by walls 25 to 26 feet high, including the parapet, 29 feet thick at the front, 18 feet at the corners and 6 feet at the rear.

suchindram Temple:

Just 13 kms. from Kanniyakumari, Suchindram has a temple dedicated to a deity who is the representation of the combined forces of Siva, Vishnu and Brahma. It is one of the few temples in the country where the Trinities are worshipped. The temple has a beautiful gopuram, musical pillars and an excellent statue of the Hanuman, apart from a valuable collection of art from different periods.

Nagaraja Temple at Nagercoil:

A Hindu temple dedicated to the Goddess Nāga which situated at the heart of Nagercoil. The name for the town 'Nagercoil' originated from this temple. The temple is full of images of Snakes. In addition, the gate keepers of the sanctums are two snakes.



Thiruparappu Falls:

The beautiful waterfall descending from Kodayar River is located at a distance of 60 km from Kanyakumari. After reaching Kanyakumari, there are a number of buses, auto rickshaws and taxis that connect people to different parts of the city. To reach Thirparappu Falls, the Trivandrum highway route through the village of Nagercoil can be accessed. The falls lies close to Kulasekhara village that was once ruled by kings. Thirparappu Waterfall in Kanyakumari falls is 300 feet long and consists of a rocky riverbed. The view of the water, falling from a height of 50 feet, is truly magnificent. The Thirparappu weir has been built on the rocky mass that stretches far across the distance covering one fourth of a kilometer in the direction against the streams current. This weir supplies water to the fields that are used for irrigation.

Mattur Hanging Bridge:

The Mathur Hanging Trough is the tallest as well as the longest trough bridge in Asia, having a height of 115 feet and a length of one kilometre. Constructed in 1966, this bridge has become a place of tourist importance and hundreds of tourists visit this place daily . This is situated in Mathur, hamlet of Aruvikkarai revenue village in Thiruvattar Panchayat Union. The bridge has been constructed at Mathur across the river Parazhiyar and the trough canal (Pattanamkal canal) on the bridge carries water for irrigation from one side of a hill to the other side of a hill. The trough has a height of seven feet with a width of seven feet six inches. The canal is being shouldered by 28 huge pillars. By the unrelented efforts of late Thiru. K. Kamaraj, the former Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, this canal was constructed as a drought relief measure and for the development of agriculture in Vilavancode and Kalkulam Taluks. The District Administration has recently put up a staircase from top to the bottom of the bridge and also built a children's park and bathing platforms over தேரே

Peciparai Dam:

Pechiparai Dam, built across the Kodayar River, is situated in Pechiparai, about 11 km north of Kulasekaram, in Kanyakumari District of Tamil Nadu. It is 45 km from Nagercoil and 75 km from Kanyakumari. With a catchment area of 204 sq km, the dam has a length of 425 m and a height of 120 m.

Built during the rule of Maharaja Sri Moolam Thirunal, Pechiparai Dam was designed by the European engineer Minchin in the pattern of Periyar Dam in Madurai District. The reservoir is surrounded by dense forests, with ravines and plant life of various sorts. Besides, it is home to various animals such as tiger, elephants and deer.


Padmanbhapuram Palace:

The Padmanabhapuram Palace is one of the most magnificent monuments of Tamilnadu. It is situated in Kanyakumari district, 15 km from Nagercoil and 55 km South-West of Thiruvananthapuram. The Padmanabhapuram palace was the seat of power of the rulers of Travancore. The palace is known for its planning and military architecture and remained the center of power till 1790, when the capital was shifted to Thiruvananthapuram. The main attractions of the Padmanabhapuram Palace are its sheer aesthetic beauty, murals, innovative designs and time tested wooden carvings.
