Kanyakumari District is one of the 30 districts of Tamil Nadu state, and also the smallest. The district takes its name from the tourist town of Kanyakumari, which is at the tip of the Indian Peninsula and faces the Indian Ocean. The headquarters (capital) of the District is Nagercoil, which is 22 km from Kanyakumari town.
District Map:
The district is a land of tourist attractions with many historic and religious sites that are centuries-old and also endowed with great natural beauty, both on the coasts and the mountainous interior, with a rich variety of flora and fauna.
Nanjilnadu, which is the present Agasteeswaram and Thovalai taluks (administrative sub-divisions) of the district, was under the rule of Pandyas till the early 10th century and then under Cheras. Idainadu including Kalkulam and Vilavancode taluks were under the rule of Cheras. When the power of Cheras declined due to the rise of Hoysalas and western Chalukyas, the Venad (Travancore) Chieftains (descendants of the Cheras) took advantage of the situation and gradually established their hold, on many areas of Nanjilnadu. The annexation commenced by Veera Kerala Varma was to a large extent continued by his successors and completed by 1115 A.D.
Language spoken:
The main languages spoken by people of the district are Tamil and Malayalam. English is widely understood in the urban areas. While the majority in the district speak Tamil, Malayalam is an important language, and spoken by many, in the northern and western areas of the district.HOW TO REACH:
The nearest airport is the Trivandrum International Airport, which is 90 km west to Kanyakumari. Kanyakumari is the terminal point of Southern Railway. The trains are operating from here till Jammu & Kashmir, the northern most parts of India (Himasagar Express). Kanyakumari Express offers journey till Mumbai. There is a daily train departs to Chennai named Nellai Kumari Express. The National Highway-47 is ending at Kanyakumari that stretches through Trivandrum. Tamil Nadu Transport Corporation is operating buses from Trivandrum and from other parts of Tamil Nadu.

The state runs the Kanyakumari Medical College at Asaripallam, near Nagercoil.

Vivekanada Rock(Rock memorial)

The memorial stands on one of two rocks located about 500 meters off mainland India's southernmost tip. It was built in 1970 by the Vivekananda Rock Memorial Committee in honour of the visit of the great spiritual teacher Swami Vivekananda to Shripada Parai during the month of December 1892 for deep meditation and enlightenment.
KANYAKUMARI Bagavathi Amman Temple:

Devi Kanya Kumari, known as Kumari Amman (the virgin goddess) is one of the forms of Devi. She is popularly known as "Bhagavathy Amman". Bhagavathy Amman Temple is located in Kanya Kumari (formerly Cape Comorin) on the confluence of the Bay of Bengal, the Arabian Sea, and the Indian Ocean. She is also known by several other names, including Kanya Devi, andDevi Kumari.
Gandhi memorial:

In the year 1948 the ashes of the Father of the Nation Mahatma Gandhi was immersed in the sea confluence in Kanyakumari. Before immersion, homage was paid to the ashes in the pot with flowers. Gandhiji’s disciple Acharya Kripalani took efforts for the construction of a memorial for him. The foundation stone was laid in 1954 and a beautiful Mandap came into being in the year 1956. It is noteworthy that sunlight falls on the Peeta in the Mandap on the 2nd October of the year, the day of Mahatmaji’s birth.

Every day at the twilights the beaches are crowded, as the area is famous for watching Sunrise and sunset. Kanyakumari is the only place in India where one can watch the sunset and moon rise simultaneously on a full moon evening. The unique feature of Kanyakumari is that one can easily discern the three different colors of the three oceans.

Built during the rule of Maharaja Sri Moolam Thirunal, Pechiparai Dam was designed by the European engineer Minchin in the pattern of Periyar Dam in Madurai District. The reservoir is surrounded by dense forests, with ravines and plant life of various sorts. Besides, it is home to various animals such as tiger, elephants and deer.
